Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1371 - VFW's mission is to "honor the dead by helping the living" through veterans' service, community service, national security and a strong national defense.
The purpose of the corporation shall be fraternal, patriotic, historical, and educational; to preserve and strengthen comradeship among its members; to assist worthy comrades; to perpetuate the memory and history of our dead, and to assist their widows and orphans; to maintain true allegiance to the Government of the United States of America, and fidelity to its Constitution and laws; to foster true patriotism, to maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom, and to preserve and defend the United States from all her enemies, whomsoever.
Our Post isn't just a bar with cheaper drinks. It's a place to come and socialize with other Post members. Maybe you would like to come for coffee and maybe start a coffee clutch, what better way to socialize! One group already meets quite often on a Friday afternoon. Angelo Patittucci, Ralph Cook, Commander Dave Spears and Bob Rose, just to mention a couple of the fellows. Maybe you would like to come on down and meet the new Commander. He would like to meet you !
The public can help by paticipating in our various programs. We offer Americanism contests, we participate in Cancer Aid and Research Programs, we participate in Community Service Programs, we visit Hospitals and/or VA Centers and Nursing Homes, we encourage voting, we Support Our Troops, we participate in a program called The Voice of Democracy and Patriot's Pen and give out awards, we also give out Scholarships, we teach the importance of Flag Etiquette. We also do buddy poppy drives. Donations to the organization are always welcomed.
We are always looking for local soldiers to send care packages to. You can help by sending us local Soldiers names and addresses (mostly Tioga County, NY) to rlbarrettny@frontiernet.net We would be happy to add them to our care package mailing list. Please enclose a contact name and phone number so we can check if their addresses are still valid at the time of sending the packages.
Thank you.
The parading season is upon us. I would like to remind everyone who likes to attend the parades, how to properly respect the American Flag as it passes by you. One should rise, place your right hand over your heart and hold that position until the Flag has passed by. The same thing should be done whenever the National Anthem is played, or the Pledge of Allegiance is spoken. Contact your local VFW Post or American Legion and ask for a pamphlet if you have questions or concerns regarding the proper Flag Etiquette on how to Display and Respect the American Flag.
Thank you.
